Inside Line Promotions – WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (Aug. 7, 2018) – Derek Hagar made the most of a random opportunity to race last Saturday at Riverside International Speedway during the 5th annual Cody Burks Memorial.

“We went to drive the two seater and had a rain delay after the heat races,” he said. “One of my clients, Bubba Jones, had to go into work so he asked me to race for him the remainder of the night.”

Hagar was relegated to the back of the B Main since he missed the start of the action, but that didn’t slow him as he powered from 15th to a runner-up result. He then rallied from 17th to a sixth-place finish in the main event to garner the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.

“We reblocked the car and started from neutral,” he said. “I ran the middle and made it work. I could drive the car in there wide open when other cars were lifting. I was able to keep momentum up and drive past them. My entry speed was way faster than most of the guys in front of me.”

It was the second straight outing with a strong result for Hagar, who piloted his sprint car the previous weekend with the USCS Series at Greenville Speedway in Greenville, Miss. Hagar maneuvered from seventh to fourth place during a heat race before closing the night with a third-place run in the main event.

“We backed up to fifth early and got up to third,” he said. “We had a real good rain delay and the track stayed good all night. It made it hard for any passing. Once we got strung out that’s what you had.”

Hagar will return to action this Saturday at Jackson Motor Speedway in Byram, Miss., with ASCS Mid-South Region.
